Trump’s Base

Posted by Troy on 1st March 2018 in Current Events, Political

Trump bragged about how he could shoot someone in Time’s Square and his base wouldn’t leave him.  That’s possibly true, but I will tell you this, Mr. Trump, they will leave you if you abandon the Second Amendment.  None of the laws being talked about would have prevented the mast majority of mass shootings.  These are basically infringements of Constitutional rights with no payoff.  Nothing they are suggesting would have prevented a mass shooting.  Mr. Trump, if you go against the Second Amendment, don’t bother running in 2020.  Your base will abandon you, and you will lose.  I assure you, they are way more loyal to the Second Amendment than to you.

Trump vs the NRA…and the Constitution

Posted by Troy on 28th February 2018 in Current Events, Political

I’ll give the guy credit, when he decides to do something, he decides to do something.  However, I now officially disagree with a lot of what he is trying to do regarding guns.

I cannot advocate for an age restriction on all guns.  I might be willing to do so for “assault weapons,” but that really won’t change anything.  How many school shooters are over twenty-one?  How many bought their guns vs used their parents?  Even if you take that off the table, couldn’t they just use other guns?  I do not like the idea of an age restriction for all guns.  I’m sorry, once you are off on your own, you should be able to buy a gun for your own protection.  This is especially important for teen girls as a gun levels the playing field against rapists and other predators.

I do like the ability for someone to be flagged due to exposure to law enforcement or if multiple people petition the court due to concerns about safety.  However, under no circumstance can the government take the guns and then apply due process.  Due process must come first in a free society.

Trump is a solution oriented guy.  Honestly, these and his other suggestions shows that he is trying to come up with solutions.  He shoots from the hip, and there is a “common sense” aspect to taking someone’s guns immediately if you think they are an immediate threat.  However, I fear the government way more than the random crazy person.

I suspect that his base is letting Trump know how they feel about this issue.  Trump realizes that his base is the one calling the shots, not him.  I am sure that he will realize the error of his ways and walk it back.

Of School Shootings and Economics

Posted by Troy on 27th February 2018 in Current Events, Political

I was discussing various safety measures with a friend who is a principal.  The thought occurred to me: If the cops went into the school, it would be best to launch into door nooks and behind lockers as they made their way into position to take out the shooter.  Well, maybe they should know the layout of the school.  You know what, they should run test runs over the summer so that they are familiar with the game plan and the layout.  And then I had a realization:

Sorry.  They are.  We have over 100,000 public schools in America.  We have over a hundred million weapons.  We have a handful of school shootings and most of those are targeted (ex-husband killing wife who is a teacher, kid shooting his bully, spurned lover, etc) not mass shootings like Parkland.

Let’s assume that we go with one security guard per school (which would be overkill in some schools and pathetic in others).  If we paid that security guard $30,000 a year, that would mean a cost to the taxpayers of $3,000,000 per year.

It’s rare, but let’s assume that every year 50 school kids (way overstated) are killed in these attacks.  Let’s assume that having these security guards shuts down any attempt to attack the kids (way overstated, I’m sure it’d only cut deaths 90% at best, but still).  So that means for a MERE $60,000,000 a year, we can save one child.

That’s…well, that’s pathetic.  Bear in mind that if you used $3,000,000 in food programs, medical treatment, water treatment, or a host of other areas, you could have a much greater impact.

Every choice is a cost benefit analysis.  I hate to say it, but Trump is right.  The only cost effective measure you can adopt is to allow teachers with CCWs to carry.  Anything else blows the cost benefit analysis and we are better off just accepting that these rare, tragic events are going to happen from time to time.

Let’s remember how rare these attacks are before we do anything stupid.

The Lie of Gun Violence

Posted by Troy on 14th June 2017 in Current Events, Political

There are about 33,169 gun deaths a year.

Of this, 21,175 are suicides  63.8%.  You could say “Oh…but we need to protect people from killing themselves.”  This is odd given the same people that argue this are for medical assisted suicide, particularly in the terminally ill or elderly.  I guess they have no problem with you killing yourself, but they don’t want you to do it cheaply on your own terms.  In fact, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates and virtually no guns.  Method of suicide can be found.  It’s just in the United States, guns are readily available, reliable, and painless if done correctly.  Availability of guns will most likely have little effect on the number of suicides.

786 (2.3%) deaths are accidents or intention unknown.

That leaves 11,208 homicides.  Of these  80% are gang related.  Many of these deaths are gang on gang deaths as they wage war over turf and drug territory (which could lead to either a discussion of decriminalization or really cracking down on casual drug sales, I generally prefer the former than the latter).  But bear in mind…what is the term “Homicide?”  Well, it is when a human kills another human.  This is why suicides are lumped in with homicides.

MS-13 has proven that you don’t need guns to kill people.  You just jump out of your car with machetes and hack up 16 year old girls.  Or you can do like the Boston bomber and make a bomb out of fireworks and a pressure cooker.  Or you can do like the Nice terrorist and just turn your car off the road and mow people down.

None of these statistics show how many crimes are prevented by the idea that the potential may be armed or may have a shotgun by their bed.  None of these statistics show the number of times a gun being pulled is enough to cause someone to run away from a potential crime.

Finally, the Second Amendment is not about crime or self-defense.  It is about defending your country from a government run amok.

Crocodile Tears of a Clown Prince (Obama Cries)

Posted by Troy on 6th January 2016 in Current Events, Political

Well, the most powerful man in the world (or so they say) wept on TV for all the tens or hundreds of children killed by guns.  Shame he doesn’t show the same interest in the hundreds of thousands that die to abortion each year, but those aren’t really children.  Those are just cells.  In much the same way that an eagle’s eggs are just delicious and not baby birds.

First of all, they are fake tears.  No one cries like that.  He touched his eye and then THAT eye started watering.  That’s called Vicks Vapor Rub.  Old and pathetic.  To seek to move people to reject their own rights because he is emotional.  Amazing.  Does he believe that we actually care what upsets him?  He is like a five-year-old that believes the world awaits at bated breath at their tantrums.

In regards to his new gun “laws” (as passed by executive fiat), what does he hope to accomplish?

The first is expanded background checks.  Sounds great, but what does it really accomplish.  What they want is that anyone, literally anyone, has to get a dealer’s permit and the buyer get a background check for any gun transfer, even among friends.  So what will really happen is that these casual sellers and buyers will ignore these rules.  This will turn otherwise law abiding citizens into criminals.  It is important to note that this rule wouldn’t have stopped ANY of these mass shootings.

The other is that doctors can now ask you if you have a gun.  If they believe you may be a danger to yourself or others, they will notify the authorities.  There’s already examples of states claiming the right of confiscation in these matters.  All it takes is some activist doctors sending all questionable cases to the feds.  The feds take your guns, and just like the no-fly list, good luck getting your name off the list.  So just remember, if the doctor asks if you have guns, the answer is “Hell no!  That’s for psychopaths!”  Do not answer “None of your business,” or anything else.  Any evasive answer will equal “gun owner” and “suspicious.”

People on the Terror Watch List Should Be Able to Buy Guns

Posted by Troy on 3rd December 2015 in Current Events, Political

The Democrats are talking about how they need to close the Terror Watch loophole.  This sounds like something that is so common sense on the surface.  Why would you want people that are on the Terror Watch List to be able to buy guns?  The reason is: because they can put ANYBODY on the list.  They just have to come up with a criteria.  Bear in mind, these are the same people that wanted to put veterans and people that demand adherence to the Constitution on the domestic terrorism list.  Based on that, I’d be rather heartbroken if I WASN’T on the list already.

I remember when Bush came up with the Terror Watch List.  The Liberals cried their eyes out about how people on this list have no way to see the evidence against them and no way to clear their name.  Now they want to take away a Constitutional right.

Hell, based on that logic, let’s take away other rights too if the government decides to put you on the list of people that do not deserve Constitutional rights.  Why let these supposed terrorists have freedom of speech?  Why let them vote?  Why allow them to be Muslim…since Islam does seem to be something to keep out of the hands of some people.  Ooo, let’s deny them the right to vote.  If your viewpoints are different than those in power, you could end up being a terrorist, after all.   We don’t want terrorist voting, do we?  Do they need a right to a trial?  What about slavery?  Ooooo, can we use political dissents as slaves?  Neat!  Hell, let’s just save the trouble and round them up for re-education/extermination camps.

Do you get it now?

Bloomberg’s Anti-NRA failure

Posted by Troy on 19th April 2014 in Current Events, Political

Bloomberg has decided to take the fight to the NRA and try to create a new grassroots organization to fight for more gun control.  To this end, he has devoted fifty million dollars.  Here is why he is wasting fifty million dollars:  What he doesn’t realize is that people that believe you have a right to own guns REALLY believe you have a right to own guns.  They are motivated and they are dedicated to the idea.  This is why gay marriage will eventually win.  The group that wants gay marriage REALLY wants gay marriage.  The group that doesn’t want gay marriage are much less dedicated.  This isn’t to say there isn’t a group that is hard core about it and will be up in arms.  Just like it isn’t to say that there is not a group of people that are absolutely dedicated to banning all guns.  For most anti-gunners, this is a secondary issue.  It’s one they are not that interest in because gun ownership generally has little impact on their lives.  The gun rights advocates are dedicated about it because these laws actively affect them.  As such, they will always be dedicated to stopping gun control measures, and those who want gun control measures will do so as long as nothing more interesting is going on in their lives.  I would advise Bloomberg to prepare himself for failure.

Only Racists Own Guns

Posted by Troy on 12th November 2013 in Current Events, Political

You know, it’s rare I get pissed off, but this really pissed me off.  Now the United Kingdom and Australia are trying to link gun ownership to racism.  First of all, I don’t understand why the rest of the world thinks it’s any of their business if we own guns or not.  If they think we are killing each other off, they should celebrate as it would be weakening us.  So you know what, rest of the world?  ____ off.  We’ll do as we please, and you can do as you please.  So how did they determine that racists own guns?  Well, there is a very high correlation between scoring high on a “symbolic racism” scale and gun ownership.  Um…okay.  Well, like any rational person, I asked, “What the hell makes someone symbolically racist?”  Or more to the point, “What the hell is symbolic racism?”  It took some digging, but they asked eight questions and the respondent gave an scale of Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree (basically).  The questions?

1- It’s really a matter of some people are not trying hard enough; if blacks would only try harder, they could be just as well off as whites.

2- Irish, Italian, Jewish, and many other minorities overcame prejudice and worked their way up.  Blacks should do the same.

3- Some say that black leaders have been trying to push too fast.  Others feel that they haven’t pushed fast enough.  What do you think?

4-How much of the racial tension that exists in the United States today do you think blacks are responsible for creating?

5-How much discrimination against blacks do you feel there is in the United States today, limiting their chances to get ahead?

6-Generations of slavery and discrimination have created conditions that make it difficult for blacks to work their way out of the lower class.

7-Over the past few years, blacks have gotten less than they deserve.

8-Over the past few years, blacks have gotten more economically than they deserve.

You could replace all eight of these questions with one question: “Do you believe in personal responsibility and the ability to make your own destiny?”  Anyone that would rank high on this scale would rank just as high if you swapped “blacks” with any other group you please (Welfare recipients, Hmong, Asians, Native Americans, whatever – although in fairness the part about slavery would have to be edited out).  Naturally, anyone that believes in personal responsibility would also take measures to defend themselves (such as buying a gun) as they would believe they were personally responsible for their own defense.

Let me sum up what “symbolic racism” means.  “Look, we can’t call these people racists because they don’t hate black people.  However, we are unable to get all the stuff passed that we want because they just don’t believe there are any true, ‘lynch them’ racists out there.  They think that blacks can accomplish success on their own…we MUST convince them that the belief that blacks can succeed is actually a form of racism.”  Yeah, that’s about right there, isn’t it?  Tell me…how is it not racist to believe that a black person isn’t capable of success on their own?  Believing in the ability of a person is now racism.  That is where we are right now.  This in and of itself is a sickness of the mind and a perversion of the human spirit.  They are perverting the belief in work ethic and personal responsibility and calling it a form of racism.  That’s sick enough as it is.

However, what is sicker is that they are using this perversion of thought as a way of tainting one of our rights.  As though people are going to say, “Oh…I don’t want to be racist, so I guess I have to give up my guns.”  This tactic will fail.  However, I am sure that some politicians will try to use this study as a way of pushing forth additional gun control measures stating that there is some mythical connection between gun ownership and hate crimes and, if we could only prevent gun ownership, there won’t be any more racism.

God, they are so predictable and stupid.  It’s sad there are even dumber people that will actually fall for it…

Gun Control and Mayor Blooming Idiot

Posted by Troy on 15th April 2013 in Current Events, Political

I intend a certain amount of disrespect when I call him Mayor Blooming Idiot, but that’s just because I think he’s a fascist moron.  He’s living proof that intelligence and being a billionaire don’t have to go together.  Now he questions why a father would sell a gun to his son rather than just give it to him.  Of course, to a billionaire, maybe a few hundred dollars is but a tawdry sum not worth mentioning.  I can think of a few reasons, but I don’t think it really matters.  Here is the real issue.

Can anyone tell me how many of the guns used in mass killings were purchased illegally?  Has ANYONE thought to ask?  Does ANYONE care?  If you found out that they all came through a registered dealer and were obtained legally, would it even matter to you?  Of course, if you are against guns, that would merely prove your point that all guns need to be illegal, right?  And that’s what this is all about.  It’s about chipping away at the rights of the majority of law abiding citizens because they can’t possibly advance their agenda with the truth.

Do you care that none of the laws being proposed would have stopped any of the mass killing in the recent past?  And yet, we are treated to Obama leading around Sandy Hook survivors like trained ponies in front of the camera, begging us to advance his agenda, and for what?!  Are they just ignorant of the law?  Are the Democrats merely exploiting these people in a moment of pain the way the are trying to exploit all of us by putting these mourners on stage for us to gawk at like some side show freaks?

They claim that 90% of us are for expanded background checks.  First of all, I question how many of us care to be informed.  Most mass shooters do not have anything in their records that would have prevented them from purchasing guns to start with.  Actually, what would be a better solution is to force everyone to go through a thorough medical and mental screening every single year to address these types of issues and those who would be prone to commit other crimes.  So why don’t we do that?  Because it’s an invasive breach of our rights?   Because sacrificing the rights of everyone isn’t wroth the lives we’d save?

We do agree in background checks.  I would say that most people would even agree to adding background checks to gun shows.  However, what they are talking about doing is adding checks to every single gun sale even among friends and other private individuals.  Of course, the only way to accomplish or enforce this is to make a national registry.  This is, of course, what they say they do not want to do.  Over time, they will either lose interest in these meaningless background checks or they will push for a national registry.  I’m betting that the Democrats will do the second one.

Let’s accept something, and this is more poignant in the wake of the Boston Marathon attack.  In a free society, there are going to be cases where people break the law and bad things happen.  When this happens, you can do one of two things.  You can either accept that this is part of the human condition and punish the guilt, or you can take away the rights from everyone.  Bear in mind, doing the first one won’t make you any safer as criminals will continue to break the laws.

Which will you choose?

“We’re not going to come take your guns away.” Yeah, suuuuure

Posted by Troy on 18th February 2013 in Current Events, Political

New York tried to pass a measure which would allow them to confiscate “assault weapons” from law abiding citizens.

California tried to pass a law that would allow them to confiscate “assault weapons” from law abiding citizens.

Missouri tried to pass a law that would allow them to confiscate “assault weapons” from law abiding citizens.

Now Washington (state) has tried to pass a law that would give them the right to come into the house of someone who legally owns an “assault weapon” and see if it is being stored properly.  I have a feeling, if it isn’t, that confiscation would be an option.

All of these measures have been put forth by Democrats.

In each time, Democrats claim to be shocked and ignorant that these provisions are in these bills.

Obama promised that he wasn’t going to come take your guns away.

Yeah, suuuuuuure.
