Roseanne Barr Will Not Get the Opportunity to Apologize

Posted by Troy on 31st May 2018 in Current Events, Entertainment

Samantha Bee calls Ivanka a “cunt.”  No one really cares.  Sammy comes out and says “Sooooo sorry…” which she is not, and all is forgiven.

Roseanne will not be given the same courtesy.  She has been labeled a racist.  That’s the end of it.  Bill Clinton says of Obama “A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us our coffee.”  No problem there.  Biden says he is a light skinned, well-spoken negro…no problem there  (okay, I threw in the negro word, but seriously…).

Frankly, I don’t think Roseanne mean anything racial  by the comment.  I looked at picture of Valerie Jarrett and Dr. Zira, and I gotta say…separated from birth, yo.

Here’s my thing.  Roseanne is a living, breathing human being, as are all her co-stars.    We have deprived them all of their livelihood…over a tweet.  I’m sorry.  I didn’t even want to crack down on Michael Vick over the dog fighting.  Humans win.  Sorry, but that’s the truth.  I don’t want to destroy anyone’s life because I truly believe that we all need and deserve a chance for redemption.  They could have demanded that Roseanne make a donation to the NAACP or done community service in the intercity, or pretty much anything, and that would have have been a more desirable outcome.

I believe both people have said something deplorable.  However, one gets to say “Dude, like… I’m like…totally sorry and junk…” and all is forgiven.  The other is DESTROYED.  Roseanne will probably never get serious work again.  Why?  Because of a tweet.

A review: Solo: A Star Wars Movie

Posted by Troy on 28th May 2018 in Current Events, Entertainment, Political

It wasn’t as terrible as people would have you believe.  If you take out the robot liberation philosophy, it’s actually a pretty good movie.

The Cannes Film Festival gave poor reviews of this movie.  I think that you must bear in mind that these are the same people who gave a standing ovation for The House that Jack Built – a serial killer movie that depicted the slaughter and dismemberment of women and children.  Frankly, their opinions mean JACK to me.

But you couple this with people in the movie talking about how Lando Calrissian is a pansexual on top of the general girl-power feel of the Last Jedi and Force Awakens, and you put a damper on things.

Everyone says “Well, there is Star Wars fatigue.”   This is absolutely not the case.  If anything, there should be super-hero movie fatigue.  And yet, there is not.  In fact, we can see that Marvel movies do fantastic and DC movies tend to fail.  Why is this?

It is because Marvel delivers what fans want.  True, Black Panther did have some black power/black liberation philosophy in it, but that was a running theme of the Black Panther comics.  It is true to the source (and very tastefully done).  In the case of Star Wars, they are using this franchise to promote liberal causes.  The net effect of this is that those who love liberal causes will probably love the movie.  Those who do not share this worldview will not particularly care for it.

The strangest thing was the promotion of Lando being a pansexual which actually had NOTHING to do with what was going on in the movie.  Such talk made those who roll their eyes at the concept of pansexuality to roll their eyes at the movie.  If they were a parent, they were even less likely to want to go to this movie with their child.  In Social Justice Warrior recap, here is what you should know: the girl in the movie is probably the biggest badass of the movie, there is a robot that runs around talking about droid liberation theology with the same annoying manner as a college sophomore, and Lando comes off at being too attached to his droid (but I can’t say that he really has a sexual attraction to said droid…and in the world where sex dolls are selling like hotcakes, I’m not entirely sure how taboo this is…).

People are whining about how Alden Ehrenreich is no Harrison Ford.  No.  He is not.  However, the Han Solo that Harrison played was 35 (or at least, that’s how old Harrison was).  The time isn’t very clear.  We do know that Darth Maul was alive.  Which means that Darth Vader is about 6 at the most.  Vader dies when he’s about 40ish.  So Alden is probably playing a teenaged Han.  As such, he wouldn’t have that cynical, hard shell that Harrison had.

It was an enjoyable movie outside of that stupid droid that is at the bottom of the list of favorite droids.  The droid liberation preaching was out of place and was not funny.  I think it was meant to be funny, but the writers failed.

Let’s remove the droid out of the equation.  What you have is a pretty decent movie with a solid plot, pretty good acting, and good special effects.

What does that tell you?

KNOCK IT OFF.  Seriously.  People do not go to Star Wars movies for left-leaning preaching.  They go there either for light saber battles or for classic, romantic storytelling.  We want to hear about balance and good vs evil.  We want courage.  We want friendship.  We want stories of hope and fighting against impossible odds.  That is what people go to Star Wars movies for.

I hope Disney learns their lessons.  Give the fans what they want, and they will reward you.  Try to shove preaching down their throat, and they will abandon you.  They still have time to save this franchise, but if they don’t learn this lesson quickly, they are going to run the franchise in the ground.  I do recommend seeing this movie if you are a Star Wars fan.  The annoying droid is a minor part of the movie, and I don’t particularly wish to see the franchise die.  Outside of the droid, it’s a pretty good movie.

Marvel is doing well because Marvel Studios is overseeing the project.  These are people who understand the characters and fans.  Star Wars is not being handled the same way.  You want to save the franchise?  Go pick up the Star Wars novels and just start making movies based on these instead of having others develop the stories.  This will work.

Deadpool 2 – A Review

Posted by Troy on 20th May 2018 in Entertainment

I will attempt to do a review with little to no spoilers:

The movie was very funny.  I will say that they cussed more than I would have liked, but it wasn’t as bad as some movies.  I don’t have virgin ears, but I prefer cussing to be appropriate.  Cussing for the sake of cussing is a little tiresome.   There was a TON of violence.  But that’s kinda to be expected from a Deadpool movie.  Definitely leave the kids at home though…

Ryan Reynolds did a fantastic job as would be expected.  He loves the character and his sense of humor and Deadpool’s sense of humor really line up well.  Josh Brolin did a fantastic job of playing Cable.  And of course, we have to talk about Zazie Beetz performance as Domino.  This caused quite the uproar on social media.  If you do not know, Domino in the comics has a kabuki white face and a black spot over one eye.  When they cast a black woman in her place, this caused a hissy fit between two groups.  The first group: those who wish for characters to resemble their comic book counterparts.  This crowd views gender/racial swapping as social justice warrior bullshit (even if they are part of the SJW crowd themselves).  The other group applauds the casting change and accuses the first group of being racist.  In full disclosure, I typically fall into the first group.  That being said, Zazie made me a believer.  She pulls off the character with such swagger and likability that I could not imagine not having her in this role.  I tip my hat to you.

There were a couple of political jokes.  Normally, I shrug those off without much of a thought.  However, in this day in age, the early appearance of these jokes put me on edge and made me worry that the movie would devolve into a joyless political rant.  Fortunately, this did not happen.

X-men (the comic book) turned into an allegory about racism.  I believe Deadpool 2 was meant to be an allegory of prejudice against the LGBLT (yeah, I know it’s wrong, but they keep adding letters to it and I’ve stopped caring at some point…) community.  While I actually reject the underlying premise, it is actually pretty well done if you think about the place Russel escapes from as being a metaphor for the conversion camps where they talk about “curing gays.”  One thing: the people running this institute are torturing the kids.  Somewhere during the movie, they start referring to all the employees of this place as pedophiles.  Even when I watched the movie, I felt like there was a leap from child-abusers to pedophiles.  You may think I am splitting hairs here.  I am not.  Doctors running chemo on children are basically torturing children, but they are doing so with the intent of helping them.  The people of the aforementioned institute fall into this kind of classification.  I think at some point, the studio made this point and said “Let’s call them pedophiles so that people can get on board with them being killed.”  It makes the movie more enjoyable as it takes away any guilt on the mass violence.

The best part of the movie were the cut scenes during the credits.  These were hilarious.  There is no after-credits scene.  Do with that as you will.  They do a small, choral song that’s kinda funny at the end.

In Defense of Kanye

Posted by Troy on 30th April 2018 in Current Events, Entertainment, Human Nature, Political

What, precisely did Kanye say?

“I like the way she thinks.”  That’s all.  A conservative, black woman expressed herself, and so the machine had to TEAR HER DOWN, and Kanye came to her tepid defense.  Kanye later doubled down on it, and he is right about one thing.  We make prisons for ourselves.  This was  a theme of my first novel, War Journal.  We say, “Oh, I can’t be a rapper because I’m white.”  Or maybe, “I can’t be a soldier because I’m a woman.”  “I can’t quit the job I hate because I have to pay my mortgage.”  Kanye’s point is that you can’t let people (yourself included) build these mental prisons for you.

Of course, conservative pundits say the obvious: “He’s black and said he liked Trump, so the Left will destroy him.  You are not allowed to question their worldview.”  This is close, but it is not the real answer.  They would tear apart anyone they thought was on their side that came out and said, “I like Trump.”  Not only that, but if you reject any ASPECT of the Left’s agenda, they will make an example of you.  You will support nationalized healthcare, welfare, open borders (by whatever name), abortion, gun control, and all the rest, or you will be destroyed and mocked.

I don’t mind if someone has thought about their position and have decided to be a socialist or whatever.  However, most people take their beliefs as they are handed to them.  They never question it.  Kanye’s message was this: “Be a free thinker.”  If anyone wants to deride that message, then I have serious reservations regarding their intentions.  He didn’t say, “Be a free thinker and become a Republican.”   I wonder if he had told Evangelical Christians “Be a free thinker” if the Left would have ripped him a new one like they did telling Blacks to be free thinkers.  Gee… I wonder why.

We should all be free thinkers.

What Happened to the Winter Olympics

Posted by Troy on 25th February 2018 in Entertainment, Political

You no doubt heard that the ratings for this Olympics was way down.  So, what happened?

1 – Of course, there are a lot of choices for people’s entertainment.  It used to be that the Olympics were pretty much the only thing worth watching on the six channels your TV actually picked up.  Now, there are countless sources of entertainment.

2 – We weren’t doing so hot.  It’s much easier to tune in and watch when you feel like your people are winning, but when you’re losing… meeeeeh…

3 – We don’t have the Cold War anymore.  Let’s be honest, when it was East vs West, it was a substitute for a hot war.  Our passions could really come out because we had to beat those commie bastards!

4 – The coverage was boring.  It really was just God awful.

5 – But I think the real reason the ratings tanked was because the reason people watch the Olympics isn’t to see the finest athletes compete.  It’s to cheer on their country.  It was very unifying.  We could chant USA USA USA!  Over and over.  We felt the sense of pride every time our anthem is played.  But that was downplayed completely.  We had athletes taking pot shots at the President and others in the administration.  We had the media glowing about a murderess outshining our Vice-President.  They sucked all the joy out of it.  It wasn’t fun anymore.  And so people switched channels.

The Grammys Gets Political

Posted by Troy on 29th January 2018 in Current Events, Entertainment

Who could see it coming?!  Um… EVERYONE!  And that’s pretty much the way it’s been since Bush.  I don’t remember the Grammys being that political before Bush.  Maybe there would be an occasional gay marriage thing or something else, but it wasn’t overwhelming.  Then Bush came.  Bush was Hitler.  Bush was a moron.  Bush was a war monger.  The Obama came.  Obama was soooo cool.  He was, like, the coolest!  OMG, it’s Obama… he’s like… the bee’s knees!  Sooooo dreamy!  And that brings us to Trump.  It’s so hacky, it’s not even worth talking about.  This is part of the reason why people stopped watching shows like the Grammys.  Here’s the rundown:

1 – These things are basically a popularity contest.  It’s a bunch of elitists jacking off other elitists and celebrating how great they are.  It’s kinda disgusting.  You want to know how to tell if music is good?  Well, frankly, sales is a good indicator.  If you have a bunch of people buying your music, you must be making music that appeals to people.  If you want to claim that being commercially successful isn’t the same as being artistically successful, I’ll counter that argument by saying: having other people tell me that something is artistically successful doesn’t mean crap to me.   If you want to go with some sort of immeasurable measurement: any music that manages to touch anybody deeply is artistically successful.  Period.

2 – Why do people tune to to have other people tell them what is good music?  Do you not trust your own ears?  Do you not trust your own guts?

3 – Let’s be honest: you have a group of people that mocks half of America and calls them stupid or Nazi.  Gee, I wonder why those people don’t want to tune it?

4 – These shows have become joyless.  Absolutely joyless.  There, I said it.  That’s all these things are.  They are self-important, self-aggrandizing, preachy…This drags on for hours.  You claim that you are there to celebrate the year in music?  How about you actually do it.

Who is surprised that the Grammys got political?  Probably the same ones that were surprised the ratings were in the gutter.

Rick and Morty

Posted by Troy on 29th September 2017 in Entertainment

I haven’t done an entertainment piece in a while, so I thought I would write a little about Rick and Morty.

Overall, I quite like the show.  I find it humorous and witty even though a lot of their subject matter is abhorrent.  However, the last season has been a little much on the whole Nihilism thing.

There are major tenements of Rick’s philosophy:  1 – no one is special (well, except for himself, who is the most special person int he world), 2 – we are all replaceable because we are not special, and 3) Nothing matters.  Special shout out to a particular episode  entitle Auto Erotic Assimilation which suggests that freedom and individuality can be negative things.

Of course, I have difficulty accepting such tenements.  Nihilism is trendy when you are young and stupid.  It’s nice as it removes any morality and is supposed to be freeing or something.  But the problem is that no one actually means it.  Those who truly adhere to Nihilism tend to end up killing themselves, as a meaningless life is unbearable.  It is also something that no one believes in their heart.  If you believe nothing matters and there is no higher God/Power/Truth, then here is the question:

A man goes into a room and finds a woman that he desires above all others unconscious beyond being revived.  He is the only one that knows he is there.  If he were to have sex with her unconscious body, no one would know.  Why shouldn’t he?

If nothing matters, if there is no true right or wrong or anything else, the only justification that you would have for him not doing so would be that he may be caught.  However, in this case, we stipulate that there is no way he can be caught and he knows it.  So why shouldn’t he?

Because it’s wrong.  Because it matters.

You can’t have it both ways.  If nothing matters, there cannot be right and wrong.  Nothing matters.  We are all going to die and be erased anyway.

The show is very funny and witty.  However, be sure that you take the philosophy of the show with more than a grain of salt.  Enjoy the show, but do not buy into the message of the show.

By the way, eye patch Morty is most definitely the current Rick’s original Morty, and Beth is now a clone.

When the CIA becomes the KGB – The Michael Flynn Saga

Posted by Troy on 15th February 2017 in Entertainment, Political

I hate to break it to CNN and the Democrats, but I have a feeling that most people are not all that concerned about Michael Flynn’s phone call.  It seems common sense and natural that an in-coming administration would talk to diplomats to establish relationships and start forging ahead.  The people really upset about this are the same people that chose to look the other way at the Fast and Furious, IRS scandal, Benghazi, the Clinton Foundation, and countless other gross violations.

Release the transcript.

That’s how you know that whatever said was pretty tame.  In this “Anti-Trump” environment, if it was actually something noteworthy, it would have been plastered all over the front page.

In regards to Michael Flynn, I will wait to pass any judgement until I see the transcript.  I assume that this is politicians playing politics.  Until I see some sort of proof that he actually said anything of note, I will not get excited.

However, what makes me afraid is this:

People are claiming that un-elected government workers should thwart foes foreign and domestic. Well, I agree.  It’s every citizen’s duty to defend the Constitution, but Trump had done nothing of the sort.  To date, he has done more to recognize the Constitution than any President I have seen in my adult life.  I remember Obama constantly assaulting the Constitution.  Bear in mind, he had more 0 to 9 decisions (including two Justices that HE appointed!) than any other President in history.

Transference/Projection:

Trump and his supporters are fascists that will be rioting in the street if he loses!  Well, it would seem that Hillary supporters are the ones that cannot accept the results of the election.  They are the ones that are rioting in the streets and hitting people and burning things.  Nothing says you are anti-fascist like beating the shit outta people that don’t share your beliefs.

Michael Flynn gave speeches to the Russians!  Yeah…and Bill gave speeches to them for millions of dollars in advance of 25% of the North American supply of uranium being sold to Russia.

The Left praised Bush for not getting involved in criticizing the next President.  Meanwhile, Obama sets up an organization and affiliates himself with groups funding the professional rioters.

The Left likes to portray Trump supporters as belligerent morons.  Yet, if they ever bring themselves to actually have a political discussion with me or any other Trump supporter, it quickly turns into the leftist just screaming.

The Left claims that Trump is delivering us into the hands of the Russians, and the Russians are trying to make us lose faith in our institutions.  Yeah, like California succeeding wouldn’t work against us.  No people can be conquered if they are united.  I have never seen us so fractured.  Instead of trying to come together at all, the Left is driving their base into a frenzy and sowing seeds of hatred among them.  What has Trump done to divide us anywhere on the scale of what I just mentioned?  In fact, considering the vile and extreme sentiments aimed at him constantly, his responses have been very mute and restrained.  To the regular people who spew bile at him, he has been completely silent.

Meanwhile, while all of this is going on, Trump’s administration is cracking down on Russia at the UN.  Mattis is getting NATO to actually fund more for their own defense.  Japan and Israel seem thrilled at our new President.  You can tell by their body language that when Trump says America stands behind their allies, they believe him–whereas Obama’s promises of support were mere bluff.  Just ask the Syrians what red-lines drawn by Obama meant.

What I fear is that the CIA really is the shadow-government that conspiracy theorists claim.  Do as they say, or they will destroy you.  This is dangerous.  If this is true, this means that no one is safe.  Also, there are protections in place to protect American citizens even if the CIA is tapping Russian diplomats (which they always are–just as we are always interfering in the elections of Russia, Israel, Canada, England…).  Given the time that these taps were happening, this means that Obama or one of his higher level minions spied on their political opponents.  You want to talk about Soviet Russia?

I don’t fear the Russians.  I have shot Russian ammunition.  After you do so, you will understand that Russia is no real threat.

If an operative shows up with plans for Trump to declare martial law, I will applaud them.  If someone assassinates a President that declares martial law, I will applaud them.  But what is happening here is that things are being leaked to undermine Trump’s Presidency.  They want him to look weak and stupid and hurt our international relations.  Why?  Because Trump is a danger to our country?  What seems to be a bigger danger to our country?  One man which is subject to the checks and balances that have kept us a free people for close to 250 years?  Or does it seem more likely that fomenting civil unrest, pitting countryman against countryman, undermining the trust of our allies, and emboldening our enemies?  Is having the world on fire worth making Trump look bad?  Bear in mind, you either want blood in the streets or Trump to lose in four years.  WOW!  Yey!  That’s all you will get if you are successful.  A weaker country.  That’s what you want.  Just for a better chance of beating one man at one election in four years.

To anyone that thinks I am being inconsistent, here is the difference between what is happening and Wiki-Leaks: Wiki-Leaks was a private group.  I also think they should be held accountable for their illegal acts.  That does not mean that I will not consider the information that is provided out of something that is obtained illegally.  Truth must be regarded, but those those broke the law must be held to account.  But this is a government agency working against its political opponents.  That is dangerous.  This is what makes totalitarian regimes.  If Flynn broke a law, he should face the punishment.  But I am MUCH more concerned about the government acting to suppress their political prisoners.

Welcome back Bob Beckel!

Posted by Troy on 16th January 2017 in Current Events, Entertainment

I hate Juan Williams.  There.  I said it.  In fact, there have been times I’ve avoided “The Five” just because I didn’t want to listen to him–and that’s factoring in the fact that I am secretly in love with Kimberly Guilfoyle and could stare at her all night..  Juan always comes across as a condescending ass.  While Bob Beckel may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, he comes across as likable, if sometimes a bit of a buffoon, but I’ll take a likable buffoon over a condescending ass any day of the week when it comes to a show that’s meant mostly for entertainment value.  While his welcome back episodes was a little rough (the chemistry has not quite returned), I am glad that they have finally replaced Juan Williams.

Dr. Strange – A review

Posted by Troy on 5th November 2016 in Entertainment

This was a typical Marvel movie with a blend of action and comedy.  This is meant as praise, not insult.  Marvel consistently does a good job in delivering highly enjoyable movies.

The story – Basically, this is a good hero story that blends in strong elements of mysticism (Pathways to Mastership come to mind).  If witches and wizards attract you, you will probably like this angle.  It is also highly philosophical (think Captain America series like Winter Soldier and Civil War).  Without getting too deep in the weeds, the main philosophical arguments would be such things as relativism, utilitarianism, and Denotology.  However, these topics are just in the background–ie, the characters are driven by different philosophies, but it’s not some boring ethics essay.

The visuals – Bar none, this is the most visually stunning movie I have ever seen.  The imagination to create these effects is astounding, and many of the elements plays perfectly in 3D.  Without a doubt, also the best 3D I’ve ever seen.  I won’t say anything else that may ruin any of the effects.

The costume/makeup – Typically, I don’t comment about this kinda stuff, but good job!  Google Dr. Strange and look at his outfit…this could have come off as corny, but they made it look very cool in the movie.  They also did a great job on the eye makeup of the villains.

The soundtrack – What little bits I noticed were great.  However, the story and action kept me too focused to tell much about it.

Casting – All the actors did a great job, but great job of  casting Benedict Cumberbatch.  One, he did a great job of acting, but he also looks a good deal like the comic book version, which is a plus.  His baritone voice also worked well with the character.

I am giving this 5-stars (which translates into ”Dude, you gotta see this movie.”).
